KSA #11 Teachers gather and use information about students' learning needs and progress and assess the range of learning objectives
"Allie used a variety of formative and summative assessments in the planning, delivery and assessment of student learning. She allowed for differentiation, checked often on the depth of student knowledge and provided timely feedback."
- Jodean H., PS III Teacher Mentor
Through my university education, as well as my time in the classroom, I have witnessed the need and importance of assessment. Pre-assessment, formative assessment, and summative assessment all play an equal role in students' progress as learners, and as individuals. Additionally, I believe that it is extremely important to assess students in terms of their interests, learning styles, and some type of multiple intelligences. I believe that the more information that you can gather on a student, the more efforts and strategies you can put forth to meet their needs and help them to succeed.
Pre- Assessment
Pre-assessments are extremely important because you need to know where your students are coming from; what knowledge they already have on a subject. If a group of students does not have the background knowledge required for a certain topic you aren't just going to jump straight in to the thick of it. You must first identify the information that they have, don't have, and will require to move forward.
Below are a few examples of pre-assesments and corresponding rationales that I have created for different classes I have taught.

Assessment for Learning (Formative Assessment)
Formative assessment is a key component to a students' success and teacher planning. Formative assessment allows students to practice new skills or concepts while receiving feedback regarding their progress and understanding. It allows students to correct any misunderstandings or mistakes before a snapshot, or summative assessment, is administered. Additionally, formative assessment gives the teacher feedback on what students understood from the lesson, and the results can be used to guide future instruction on the topic.

Assessment of Learning (Summative Assessment)
To provide acceptable evidence to make fair and accurate judgments regarding student learning, students must have a variety of different ways to communicate their knowledge- “many ways on many days”.
