KSA #3 Teachers use the programs of study to inform and direct planning instruction and assessment.
UBD Planning
I begin planning a unit by consulting the Alberta Program of Study. I find the general and specific learner outcomes for that particular unit and I then begin to construct an enduring understanding as well as essential questions that correspond to those outcomes. This helps me to understand what the big picture of the unit looks like and in turn helps me more easily translate this big picture to my students. I then begin to think about what the best way to summatively assess these outcomes would be; which type of assessment would give me a clear picture as to the depth of understanding that each student has. After I have decided on the summative assessments I then begin to think about formative assessments. I plan a handful of formative assessments that I feel would help prepare students for the summative assessment as well as assessments that allow for appropriate student feedback. I think begin to think of individual lessons and learning activities; how can I teach the students the content in a way that they understand in a way that prepares them for both the formative and summative assessments.
Below is an example of a UBD that I created for a grade 2 Social Studies unit that I delivered in my PS III internship.

Quiz and Blueprint
The following is a quiz I created for the Mix and Flow of Matter unit I taught. To ensure that each question directly corresponds to the program of studies, the outcomes are clearly stated above the questions that they correspond to. This ensures that the students are aware of exactly what is being asked of them. Additionally, a test blueprint was created to ensure that the level of questioning in the quiz related to the Bloom's taxonomy level in the program of studies.
Learning about the Alberta Programs of Study
For Education 3501 Curriculum and Instruction we were required to do a Program of Study overview in the area of our university studies. My presentation was an overview of Alberta's Science programs of study. I focused mainly on the structure of the programs and how to navigate through them. At the time of making the presentation I wasn't sure how it would benefit me. Looking back, I am so glad that we were required to this project! Going in to practicum knowing how to use the programs of study proved to be a valuable asset. It helped me in planning and preparing for all lessons I taught.
