Meaningful Learning Activities
As often as I can, I like to give the students a role to play. I find that in giving them this role, it gives meaning to everything that we do within that unit. Below is the beginning of a unit that I created for my grade 2 class. During this unit we became Jr. Anthropologists, and therefore had to explore many different aspects of the Inuit community of Iqaluit in order to develop an understanding of their identity and culture.
Social Studies Unit Plan
My planning always begins with the Alberta Program of Studies. I determine the curricular outcomes that are required to be covered, and I move forward from there. I then develop, or make use of an existing UBD for the unit. Once the formative and summative assessment pieces have been determined, I begin to plan lessons containing meaningful learning activities. I always try to incorporate a number of different strategies and tools to keep my students engaged. Below is a brief unit plan I created for a grade 2 social studies unit. Each lesson contains a variety of learning activities and strategies.
